The Board of Trustees in Deerfield has unanimously amended the zoning code to effectively ban motor freight terminals, logistics centers, fulfillment centers and facilities for truck parking or movement.

Deerfield Mayor Daniel Shapiro initiated the zoning changes, with additional amendments including new traffic plan requirements for certain special use permits over 50,000 square feet and additional special use reviews for businesses that propose to operate overnight or include retail sales, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Andrew Lichterman, the deputy village manager, said the zoning amendments make it “abundantly clear” that warehouse and distribution facilities are prohibited within Deerfield. In September, Chicago developer Bridge Industrial withdrew plans to turn the Baxter International headquarters into an industrial park after local opposition and pushback from residents. The code updates are slated to be finalized during an upcoming board meeting on February 20.
