S. Miami Mall Owner Seeks Massive Makeover

The owners of the mostly empty Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami have proposed a massive redevelopment with more than 1,500 residential units. South Miami’s Planning Board will consider a site plan to redevelop the Shops at Sunset Place, an underperforming mall at 5701-5795 S.W. 72nd St. (Sunset Drive). Federal Realty Investment Trust, Grass River Property and The Comras Company will helm the project. Zyscovich will be the project architect (photo).

The Shops at Sunset Place opened in 1999. Currently, it has about 524,180 square feet of retail space, a movie theater, 40 apartments and a small number of offices.

Simply called Sunset Place, the new project would total 1.47 million square feet, with 1,513 multifamily units, 287 hotel rooms, 1,300 theater seats, 60,000 square feet of offices and 150,000 square feet of commercial space – with about 75% of that restaurants and 25% retail. There would also be 2,418 parking spaces.
